Price per gram, by fineness
Scrap and jewellery are paid on the pure metal they contain. These are the intrinsic values at the price above — a buyer pays less, since refining and margin come out of it.
| Fineness | Commonly called | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 24 ct999‰ | Fine gold | €119.81 |
| 22 ct916‰ | Crown gold | €109.85 |
| 18 ct750‰ | Jewellery standard | €89.94 |
| 14 ct585‰ | Common in jewellery | €70.16 |
| 9 ct375‰ | Low-carat gold | €44.97 |
Intrinsic metal value, excluding premium. Not a quote or an offer to buy.
What the common coins and bars are worth
The metal value of each piece, from its pure-metal content. Dealers quote above this: the difference is the premium, which depends on the piece, its condition and the day.

How the gold price is set
There is no single official gold price. What you see quoted is the spot price: the rate at which a troy ounce of fine gold changes hands right now on the over-the-counter market, where banks and refiners trade among themselves. It moves continuously from Sunday evening to Friday evening, and pauses over the weekend.
The reference unit is the troy ounce, 31.1035 grams — heavier than the ordinary ounce, and a leftover from the Troyes fairs of medieval Champagne. The market quotes it in dollars, so a European price carries two variables at once: the metal, and the euro-dollar rate. Gold can climb in dollars and fall in euros on the same day.
Dealers publish a buying and a selling price around that spot. The gap between them, and the extra you pay over the metal content of a given coin, is the premium — it is not part of the gold price itself.
What moves it
Gold pays no interest, so its main rival is a bond that does. When real interest rates — what is left of a yield once inflation is deducted — go down, holding gold costs less in forgone income and demand tends to rise. When they go up, the reverse.
The dollar matters nearly as much. Since gold is quoted in dollars, a weaker dollar makes it cheaper for every other currency and usually lifts the price. Central banks are the third force: they have been net buyers for over a decade, and their purchases are large, slow and fairly insensitive to price.
Then there is physical demand — jewellery, coins, bars, industry — which sets the floor rather than the headlines, and moments of stress, when gold is bought precisely because it is nobody else’s promise.
Frequently asked
What is the gold price per gram today?
It is shown in the table above, for each fineness. Divide the ounce price by 31.1035 to get the price of a gram of fine gold; for 18-carat gold, multiply that by 0.750.
Why is the price in euros different from the one in dollars?
The market quotes gold in dollars per troy ounce. A euro price is that figure converted at the current euro-dollar rate, so it reflects both the metal and the currency. The rate used here comes from the same market feed as the metal price, at the same instant.
Will a dealer pay me this price?
No. These figures are the intrinsic value of the metal. A buyer deducts refining costs and a margin, and a seller of coins adds a premium. Compare several dealers before deciding — Vaultastic shows their prices side by side.
How often does this page update?
The price is rebuilt every minute while the market is open. Over the weekend it holds Friday’s close, because the market itself is shut.
Does the 20 franc Napoléon follow the gold price?
Largely, yes: it contains 5.8064 grams of fine gold, and that content sets its floor. On top of it sits a premium that varies with demand for the coin, which can move on its own.
