Price per gram, by fineness
Scrap and jewellery are paid on the pure metal they contain. These are the intrinsic values at the price above — a buyer pays less, since refining and margin come out of it.
| Fineness | Commonly called | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 999999‰ | Fine platinum | €49.50 |
| 950950‰ | Jewellery standard | €47.08 |
| 900900‰ | Coin platinum | €44.60 |
Intrinsic metal value, excluding premium. Not a quote or an offer to buy.
What the common coins and bars are worth
The metal value of each piece, from its pure-metal content. Dealers quote above this: the difference is the premium, which depends on the piece, its condition and the day.
| Coin or bar | Gross weight | Pure metal | Metal value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platinum Eagle 1 oz999.5‰ | 31.1035 g | 31.1035 g | €1,541.31 |
| Maple Leaf 1 oz999.5‰ | 31.1035 g | 31.1035 g | €1,541.31 |
| 1 kg bar999.5‰ | 1,000 g | 1,000 g | €49,554 |

How the platinum price is set
Platinum is quoted per troy ounce in dollars, over the counter, like gold and silver. The similarity ends at the size of the market: the world mines somewhere around a tenth as much platinum as gold each year, and most of it is bought on long industrial contracts rather than traded.
A thin market is a jumpy one. There are fewer participants standing between a large order and the price, so platinum can gap in a way gold rarely does — and the euro price adds the dollar’s own movement on top.
One consequence worth knowing if you compare sources: because no one quotes platinum directly in euros, every European platinum price you see is a conversion, and different providers convert at slightly different moments. A few tenths of a percent between two sites is normal and is not a sign that either is wrong.
What moves it
The car industry, more than anything. Platinum’s main use is the catalytic converter, where it turns exhaust gases into less harmful ones. Vehicle production, emissions rules and the slow shift to electric drivetrains therefore feed straight into demand.
Palladium sits next to it as a substitute. The two metals do much the same job in a catalyst, and manufacturers switch between them as the price gap widens — which ties each one’s price partly to the other’s.
Supply is unusually concentrated: a large majority comes from a handful of South African mines, so a power shortage or a labour dispute in one region can affect the world price within days. Jewellery, mostly in China, and recycled metal from scrapped cars make up most of the rest.
Frequently asked
What is the platinum price per gram today?
It is in the table above, for each fineness. Divide the ounce price by 31.1035 for a gram of fine platinum; for 950 jewellery, multiply that by 0.950.
Platinum is rarer than gold — why is it cheaper?
Rarity sets supply, not price; demand sets price. Gold is held as a reserve asset by central banks and households worldwide, and almost all of it ever mined still exists. Platinum is mostly bought to be used, so when industry needs less of it, there is no comparable pool of monetary demand underneath.
What does 950 platinum mean?
950 parts of platinum per thousand, the usual standard for jewellery. It is markedly purer than 18-carat gold at 750, which is one reason platinum pieces feel heavier than they look.
Is platinum taxed like gold?
No. The VAT exemption that applies to investment gold in the European Union does not extend to platinum, so a purchase of physical platinum normally carries VAT. Rules on a later sale vary by country — worth checking with a professional before you buy.
Why does the price here differ slightly from another site?
Because platinum has no direct euro quotation. Every euro figure is a dollar price converted, and providers convert at slightly different instants and with slightly different rates. The gap is normally a few tenths of a percent.
