Price per gram, by fineness
Scrap and jewellery are paid on the pure metal they contain. These are the intrinsic values at the price above — a buyer pays less, since refining and margin come out of it.
| Fineness | Commonly called | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 999999‰ | Fine silver | €1.77 |
| 925925‰ | Sterling silver | €1.64 |
| 900900‰ | Coin silver | €1.59 |
| 800800‰ | Continental silver | €1.42 |
Intrinsic metal value, excluding premium. Not a quote or an offer to buy.
What the common coins and bars are worth
The metal value of each piece, from its pure-metal content. Dealers quote above this: the difference is the premium, which depends on the piece, its condition and the day.
| Coin or bar | Gross weight | Pure metal | Metal value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maple Leaf 1 oz999.9‰ | 31.1035 g | 31.1035 g | €55.10 |
| American Eagle 1 oz999‰ | 31.1035 g | 31.1035 g | €55.10 |
| 50 F Hercule900‰ | 30 g | 27 g | €47.83 |
| 1 kg bar999‰ | 1,000 g | 1,000 g | €1,772 |
Intrinsic metal value, excluding premium. Not a quote or an offer to buy.
How the silver price is set
Silver is quoted the same way gold is: a spot price per troy ounce of fine metal, in dollars, agreed over the counter between banks, refiners and industrial buyers. A European price is that figure converted at the euro-dollar rate of the moment, so it carries the metal and the currency at once.
What differs is the market behind it. Silver is worth a fraction of gold per ounce, so the same tonnage represents far less money, and the pool of capital that trades it is correspondingly small. A flow that would barely register in gold can move silver several percent. Expect the swings to be wider, in both directions.
It is also the only precious metal whose demand is mostly industrial rather than monetary. Roughly half of it is consumed — soldered into a circuit, laid into a solar cell — and never comes back to the market. That gives the price a floor gold does not have, and a sensitivity to the economic cycle that gold does not have either.
What moves it
Industry first. Silver is the best electrical conductor there is, which makes it hard to substitute at any sensible price: photovoltaics, electronics, brazing alloys and medical uses absorb most of the annual supply. When solar installations accelerate, silver feels it.
Supply barely answers back. Most silver is not mined for its own sake — it comes out of the ground as a by-product of copper, lead and zinc. A miner opening a copper pit is not deciding to produce more silver, so a higher silver price does not summon much more of it, and a lower one does not shut it off.
Then there is gold. Silver follows it closely enough that the ratio between the two is watched in its own right, and investment demand — coins, bars, funds — tends to arrive for the same reasons it arrives in gold, only with more force relative to the size of the market.
Frequently asked
What is the silver price per gram today?
It is in the table above, for each fineness. Divide the ounce price by 31.1035 for a gram of fine silver; for sterling, multiply that by 0.925.
What does 925 or "sterling" mean?
It is the fineness: 925 parts of silver per thousand, the rest usually copper, which hardens a metal too soft to use pure. Most silverware and jewellery is sterling, so a 100 g sterling object holds 92.5 g of silver.
What is the gold-silver ratio?
How many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys. It is simply one price divided by the other, and it is followed because it has swung widely over the last century — which makes it a rough gauge of how the two are priced relative to each other, not a prediction of anything.
Is silver taxed like gold?
Not in the European Union. Investment gold is exempt from VAT under EU law; silver, platinum and palladium are not, so a purchase of physical silver normally carries VAT. Other taxes may apply on a sale depending on where you live — worth checking with a professional before you buy.
Why does silver move more than gold?
Because the market is far smaller in money terms, and because half its demand is industrial. A given flow of buying or selling has more effect on the price, and a slowdown in manufacturing hits silver in a way it does not hit gold.
